How consular jurisdiction works
A consulate does not serve everyone from its country. Each government splits the US into districts and assigns every state, and sometimes single counties, to one office. Italy, for example, sends residents of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland to Washington, while the rest of Maryland belongs to Philadelphia.
- Choose your country and ZIP code in the finder above.
- Open the office that lists your state; if your state is split, check the county list on its page.
- Use that office’s passport or appointment page to book and prepare documents.

Frequently asked questions
Can I go to any consulate of my country in the US?
Usually not. Most countries divide the US into consular districts, and passport and civil-registry services are handled by the office for the state where you live. Choose your country and ZIP code above to see the office whose published jurisdiction covers your state.
What is the difference between an embassy and a consulate?
The embassy is the main diplomatic mission, in Washington, DC. Consulates and consulates general are offices in other cities that provide services to citizens, such as passports and civil registration, and in some cases visas. Many embassies also have a consular section that serves the states around Washington.
Do I need an appointment at the consulate?
Most consulates require an appointment for passports and other in-person services, often through a national online system (for example Prenot@mi for Italy or e-Konsulat for Poland). Each office has an appointment page when the consulate publishes an official booking link.
Are honorary consulates included?
No. Honorary consuls usually offer limited help and cannot issue passports. This guide lists career offices: embassy consular sections, consulates general and consulates, plus Taiwan’s Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices.
Is this an official government website?
No. ConsulateOffices is an independent guide. Addresses, hours and fees come from the official websites of each government and are linked on every page.
